Constructivism

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

This art movement was about saying something and getting your point across. Its use of geometric forms, cut out imagery and the same colours gave it a simple dynamism and power that was accessible to all people.

There had never been anything like it before and it shows how design can be a hugely effective form of mass communication.

Cubism

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Not really ‘design’, but when I got into Picasso’s and George Braque’s work something clicked. I went from drawing lengthy photographic pictures to something a bit wilder and expressive. It really opened up new doors for me and I haven’t looked back since.

Vaughan Oliver

Vaughan created distinct identities for lots of bands but for me its his work for The Pixies and Gus Gus that stands out.

His style of strange imagery with distinctive typography made a big impression on me when I was at college. It was the first design style I really wanted to emulate and gave me a lot of inspiration.

Saul Bass

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Famous for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger and Martin Scorsese. His film posters look simple yet their vivid colours and hand drawn style catches the imagination.

It would have definitely made me want to go and see it the cinema (if I was around then!) and that’s the point isn’t it.
